Interested in starting a career in professional real estate and valuation services? Begin your journey at DePaul by taking these new basic appraisal principles and procedures courses. These in-person classes will help you prepare to sit for the exam.

These courses are open to anyone, including:

  • Professionals entering the Real Estate and Valuation field
  • Recent college graduates interested in Real Estate and Valuation
  • Military personnel transitioning to civilian careers
  • Professionals seeking a career change
  • Those who need exam prep for Illinois licensing

Course 1: Basic Appraisal Principles

  • Identify the basic components in the appraiser’s scope of work decision
  • Recognize the ethical and competent appraisal practice
  • Recognize the distinctive difference among land, real property, and personal property
  • Recognize the major components that appear in all definitions of market value
  • Solve basic math problems using a financial calculator
  • Recognize the definitions of appraisal practice, valuation services, appraisal review, etc.

 

Course 2: Basic Appraisal Procedures

  • Identify the eight steps of the valuation process
  • Identify the basic components and processes used the derive a value indication
  • Identify the six procedures for analyzing land or site value
  • Identify the three cost-estimating methods used by apprasiers
  • Apply compoent costs to estimate the cost of residential building improvements
  • Analyze sales to select appropoate comparable properties

Get prepared before your first class with two optional sessions designed to help you succeed from day one.

1. Math Refresher: Review the foundational math concepts used in Basic Appraisal Principles and Basic Appraisal Procedures.

2. HP 12C Calculator Workshop: Learn the basics of the required HP 12C Financial Calculator and how it will be used throughout the program. Students are also encouraged to explore free HP 12C tutorials on YouTube.

These sessions will help you build confidence, strengthen key skills, and start the program ready to succeed.
