Financial Planning Module 1: Fundamentals of Financial Planning and Insurance Planning
Fundamentals of Financial Planning provides an overview of the financial planning and insurance industry. You’ll learn the basic terminology of financial planning and develop a thorough understanding of insurance basics, risk management strategies, evaluation of client data, the concept of time value of money, and the ethical considerations necessary for successful financial planners.
This 11-week course is the first module in the Financial Planning Certificate Program. Classes are offered in a flex format on a quarterly schedule. Flex rooms allow students to participate and feel included regardless of where they are located. Five of the class meetings are scheduled on campus in a tri-modal classroom, and the other five classes are scheduled online via Zoom. The eleventh week is the final exam, which is held online. Students are free to attend on-campus or synchronously on Zoom and may change their attendance location throughout the quarter. All classes are offered on weeknights to accommodate working students. Classes are recorded for future viewing. All learning activities serve both student audiences

DePaul's Financial Planning Certificate Program offers:
- Exceptional instruction- All modules are taught by professional financial planners with either CFP® certification or other appropriate professional license or designation. Our instructors use CFP Board standards as the framework for the modules and add their own exercises, case studies and handouts. This results in courses that combine sound financial planning theory and practical skill development.
- Convenient location and scheduling- Modules are offered online and on campus on a quarterly schedule. For students who seek maximum flexibility, enroll in a virtual course and attend from the comfort of your own home. Classes are recorded for future viewing. Or, enroll in our in-person classes which are held at DePaul's Loop campus located in the heart of downtown Chicago. In-person classes are offered on weeknights to accommodate working students.
- Proven student success- In addition to preparing for the exam, our program equips you to succeed in today's competitive profession of financial planning.
The Financial Planning Certificate Program is certified by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc., to provide you with the educational component of CFP® certification. It provides an overview of what might be ultimately tested in the certification examination, but this is an education program, not an exam-prep program.
CFP® Scholarship Opportunities: The CFP Board Center for Financial Planning administers scholarship programs that assist aspiring CFP® professionals with completing the education and exam requirements for CFP® certification. In addition, this site provides a clearinghouse of third-party scholarships offered across the financial planning profession to make it easy for aspiring CFP® professionals to find and take advantage of programs for which they are eligible.
